First law of thermodynamics

Here's what I don't understand: The sheer number of internet blogs/sites devoted to weight loss.

(THIS COULD POSSIBLY BE TRIGGERING TO PEOPLE WITH EATING DISORDERS BUT IF YOU SPEND YOUR LIFE OBSESSING ABOUT FOOD LIKE I USED TO, YOU PROBABLY NEED TO READ THIS)
If you want to lose weight, eat less and move more. The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be interconverted from one form to another. If you consume chemical energy in the form of food and don't burn it off (ie convert it to thermal energy/work), it will be stored as chemical energy in the form of fat somewhere on your body. Anything above and beyond that is mind over matter.

Its a little more complicated than that, of course, but not much. I could spend days explaining the science behind it, how different foods are metabolised differently and such. But what is the point? Trying to lose weight by thinking about food is like trying to give up drinking by watching beer ads. You're only making your life harder. If you want to lose weight, eat less. If you want to eat less, think about something other than food.

I used to be fat. I could torture myself forever by looking at food blogs but what is the point? If you wanted to quit cocaine, you wouldn't watch videos of people snorting the shit. Same prinicple applies to anything. If you're trying not to do it, try not to think about it.

Seeing as I have come this far with this post, I may as well go against everything I have said here and offer three basic tips on how to lose weight. None of this is rocket science. I'm essentially saying the same thing three times.

1: Don't eat sugar (its empty calories)
2: Don't drink alcohol (see above)
3 Don't eat sugar (and remember that all carbohydrates are made up of sugars)

(don't get me started about how sugar effects the microbiome and the role of Candida albicans in all of this, I will go on forever)

Now go do something else. Google something unrelated to food or excercise. Cat videos are great :D

Answer for question 4372.

Are you scared of the dark? How do you combat this fear when you have to function in the dark?
Melissandre always says the night is dark and full of terrors. The real question, of course, is how scared of such terrors do we need to be.

Darkness on its own is not scary. Its only the half light that twists things into morbid forms. And even then, only in your imagination do the terrors ever exist.

Eventually, the night will be no more. Nothing can last forever. Part of the reason I call myself "Phosgene" on the internet is because it means "the generator of light". Winter is coming, but Winter's time is limited and all it takes is a tiny bit of light to overcome all the darkness in the world.

Bring on the Spring!

Morning Star

Oh Morning Star, why must thou die;
So that the Evening Star may rise?
You dive toward the rising sun,
And vanish to the underworld;
So that you may rise again,
Brighter and more beautiful,
Reborn in the Western Sky.
Oh Morning Star, why must thou die?

You look so pretty from a distance,
Its a neat trick of the light.
The way your clouds reflect the sun
Make you shine oh-so-bright.
They say you’re not so pretty inside.
Underneath the sulfur clouds,
There’s lightning storms with acid rain,
And yet you shine, so strong and proud.

Oh Pretty Star! Do Tell!
Is there any life on Hell?

For Evening Star, you shine so bright,
I wish upon you every night,
Even though you’re not a star at all.
Evening Star, why did they name you
For the cruelest God of all?
